Schools open this week so please drive carefully!!
This week most of the Boone County Schools will be starting and motorists will see an increase in pedestrian traffic as children walk to and from school. School opening also means the bright yellow buses will be back on our city and county roadways picking up and dropping off children.
The Boone County sheriff's office wants to encourage all drivers to use caution as they travel our Rural roads and city streets, keeping an eye out for children and school buses as they start back to school.
Sheriff Ron Fehr warns "that a large number of school bus related accidents occur at bus stops, so motorists must be aware of the bus stops along their routes and remain alert for children waiting for, boarding or getting off school buses."
The Boone County Sheriff's Office reminds drivers that passing a school bus with either its Amber or Red flashing warning lights activated is a violation of Iowa Motor Vehicles Laws. iowa Motor vehicle Code section 321.372 states the following.
Upon observing a school bus with its amber or red flashing lights on drivers shall reduce their speed to not more than 20 miles per hour and be prepared to stop when the school bus stops. The driver shall bring the vehicle to a complete stop not closer than 15 feet from the school bus when it is stopped and the arm extended. The vehicle shall remain stopped until the stop signal arm is retracted after which the driver may proceed with caution.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office also wants to remind motorists that a school bus driver who observes a violation of this law may forward a written report to a peace officer indicating when and where the violation occurred, as well as a vehicle description and license number plate number, Upon receiving that information , the Peace Officer will complete an investigation of the incident and if the investigation is not able to clearly identify the driver at the time of the violation, THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE WILL BE CHARGED.
Sheriff Ron Fehr states " we are asking drivers to be extra carefull as they drive through school zones and on the County roadways. Staying alert for pedestrians and and school bus traffic could prevent a tragedy."
